Hi Everyone…..

Once again I find myself in debt to you all for another gift. Thanks loads; it was swell. It arrived here in perfect condition and was as much appreciated by the other fellows in the office as it was by myself.

If everything goes alright I’ll be heading back to Rhode Island on a furlough before too long, and when I get there I’ll drop around to look Bryant over once more. However, I’m not looking forward to the six-day and six-night train ride in from of me. But I guess it will be worth the ride when I get home to see the folks and my old friends again.

The Bryant Service Club is doing a grand job for the fellows in the service, and we especially appreciate those letters you send out occasionally, giving all the “low-down” on kids we used to know…….keep them coming.

Until I get home to see you in person, I’ll sign off with very best holiday wishes to you all.

Sincerely
Bert Bullock

January 28, 1944

Dear Bryant Service Club Members:

It has been a long time since I've written to you folks up there at Bryant College but you aren't forgotten...not by a longshot. How could any of the alumni forget you when you are so darned good to us. Honestly we do appreciate the letters and presents you send us more than you folks probably realize.

I've been stationed down here in Miami Beach ever since I came into the service in June 1940, and realize how fortunate I've been. I never dreamed that I'd be staying in Florida in the best hotels for such a long time and at no expense to myself. It is really like a paid vacation. However, I know that there are lots of boys and girls who are not as fortunate and I'm hoping that I'll be over there with them soon. But to tell the truth I'd like to wait until Spring.... I was up in Rhode Island in November and nearly froze...guess I'm a sissy and can't take it anymore.

On our days off we go down to the beach and swim and sunbathe. It is really wonderful. Of course there are days when we wish that we were out there but have our work and other duties to perform. Then we growl and grumble but that is just part of army life. You know I just love to write to folks up North and tell them how beautiful it is down here and try to make them envious.... I aught [sic] to be working for the Chamber of Commerce, don't you think?

I have a good job here at the base Headquarters...chief clerk in the File Department. I have six enlisted men, two WACs, and six civilians working under me. The work is very interesting and I have a swell bunch of people to work with so all in all I think I am doing pretty well.

There are loads of opportunities for recreation in your off hours...shows, bowling, night-clubs, swimming, fishing, horseracing, dog racing, bike riding, etc., and you can be certain that all the facilities are well patronized. At this time of year there are as many vacationists as there are service men but during the summer months the facilities are mostly used by men and women in uniform.

Well, I'll sign off for this time and hope to hear from you folks again real soon. Please pardon the red typing but the upper half of the ribbon is all shot and I'm too lazy to change it tonight.

Sincerely
Bert Bullock
[Transcription ends]

4 April, 1944

Bryant Service Club Members:

Thanks loads for the cigarettes you sent me for Easter. They are more than appreciated. I like the flats to keep in my desk drawer at the office, and I do keep them in the drawer, otherwise they would just disappear like magic. Honestly the girls here at Headquarters, both WACs and civilians, can do away with more cigarettes in a day than a fellow uses in a week.

The base here at Miami Beach is breaking up and we are moving our Headquarters to San Antonia, Texas. I sure do hate to leave Florida….it is a swell place to be stationed…..really a playground. But all can’t be sugar and spice when you are in the service. I realize that I've been a lot more fortunate than most of the boys to be stationed here for two years.

I’ll send you my new address when I get moved and thanks again for the gift.

Best Wishes
Bert Bullock

AMERICAN RED CROSS

April 13, 1944

Dear Bryant Service Club Members-

I’ve already written you that the cigarettes arrived o.k. but want to thank you now for the letter. It arrived a few days ago along with about twenty other letters, and believe me they were a welcome sight. You see, I’ve been laid up at the hospital for a few days and my mail has been held up somewhere and when you are in the habit of receiving it daily, you miss it when it is delayed.

I don’t know if the “Battle of Miami Beach” is too much for me or whether I just don’t live right, but here I am a t the Miami Biltmore in Coral Gables. It has been purchased by Uncle Sam and now used as a hospital for Air Corps men- and what a lay-out! I’m having a wonderful time and don’t care whether I get back to duty or not. We have a theatre, 18 hole golf course, three swimming pools, PX, etc. It’s actually a city in itself. Reminds one of Grand Central Station.

Thanks to the Red Cross there is never a dull moment around here- always something doing- movies, show, [?] parties, hot dog roasts, all kinds of games and sports, dancing, etc. The Red Cross is really doing a marvelous job for the boys.

Will [?] of what I’ve already said there isn’t much more around a hospital so I’ll close now with very best wishes to you all.

Sincerely
Bert Bullock

July 17, 1943

Dear Bryant Service Club Members:

Thanks very much for your letter of July 9th enclosing a list of members of the classes of 1934 and 1935. There are several names on the list that I correspond with regularly and also a couple that I’ve been wondering about.

However, in the letter itself you mentioned that you had sent me a package on May 28th and as yet you had received not acknowledgement from me. But I did write you soon after receiving some camel cigarettes. If for some reason the letter did not reach you, I would like to express my thanks again now and also let you know that you have the correct address.

How I’d like to get up to Rhode Island for a good swim. Here at Miami Beach we have plenty of bathing facilities, but during the summer the temperature of the water reaches 85 or 88 degrees, and after a swim you are not refreshed like you lucky folks are a home. There is one break we get here in Florida though, and that is we can go bathing and lay on the beach wile you are wrapped up in heavy winter clothing to keep warm. The ocean temperature averages around 70 or 75 degrees in the winter and it sure feels good. Even this simmer we are getting the breaks. So far the hottest day we have had has been 86 and I’ve seen by the Providence Papers that you have had much warmer days even though you can look forward to a cool day now and then.

Well, again thanks for the letter and packages I’ve had from you folks. Keep up the good work, and best of luck to you all.

Sincerely,
T/Sgt. B. F. Bullock

Dear Club Members….

Once again I find myself indebted to your for the swell box of candy which arrived today in A-1 condition. As usual, whenever a package is brought into the office, everyone on duty crowds around your desk until it has been opened and the “eatables” passed around, so consequently I didn’t have too much for my own sweet tooth. However, you may rest assured that it was “well taken care of,” and I’d like to express my thanks for the entire “gang.”

I suppose you folks are in the middle of the mid-year term now and up to your necks in work…. I only wish I were back at Bryant once more….those were the good old days, but I didn’t have sense enough to appreciate them. Like lots of other folks, I certainly would do differently if I were offered the opportunity to live my life over.

Keep the news-letters coming, and thanks again for the candy.

Very best wishes to all
Bert Bullock

Gentlemen:

I received your gift of cigarettes yesterday and you may rest assured that they certainly were appreciated very much. Most of my buddies are surprised that schools have such organizations as the Bryant Service Club, but think it is a grand idea. They only wish that their schools would remember fellows in the service.

I certainly have been very fortunate to be stationed here at Miami Beach for so long, and especially during the winter months. From all the letters I receive, I understand that you people have been experiencing a good old-fashioned New England winter, but it has been swell down here.

Although we received many gifts and cards and had many invitations out to Christmas dinners, it really didn’t seem like the holiday season down here at Miami Beach.
Many thanks for your generous gift of cigarettes. They sure are a present that a fellow in the Service appreciates.

I think that the idea of the Service Club is swell, but realize that it means a lot of work and time on the part of the members of Bryant College.
