U. S. ARMY

4814 North 28th Street
Tacoma 7, Washington
26 December 1944

Bryant Service Club
Bryant College
Providence, Rhode Island

Dear Friends:

Thank you so much for your fine package. It came through in fine shape although delayed some because of my recent move within the Fort.

It was good to hear from you and to learn some of the news even though it was saddening to learn of the death of Capt. Donald Walker. He and I both worked for Mr. Barber in the office. I knew him well and surely was sorry to learn of his death. War is truly HELL, not so much to those of us who have been fortunate enough to remain in this country and have our wives with us, but certainly for those who were forced to spend Christmas in the front lines.

Thank you for remembering us fellows who are trying to serve our country in this hour of need and pray that this war will soon end so that not only can we come back but that also more of us may come back.

My address is the one listed above for I am living at home with my wife who moved west with me. My Army address is Headquarters & Service Company, ASFTC, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Best Wishes for a Happy New Year to all of you and friends of Bryant College.

Sincerely,
Paul R. Cone

Dear Friends of Bryant Service Club.

It was certainly nice of you to send me that box of candy. I was away over Easter so didn’t get it until I got back but it tasted good, not only to me, but fellows around me in the barracks.

Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness. These touches with our former civilian life help our morale greatly.

I am working in the Camp Personnel Office until my assignment comes thru.

I’m classed as an auditor by the War Dept. in Washington + must await orders from there.

Glad for any news of Bryant fellows in the service. Thanks again for your kindness.

Sincerely,

(Pvt.) Paul R. Cone ‘36
Co B, 31st Med Trig Bn
4th Platoon
Camp Grant, Ill.

Dec. 24, 1943

The Bryant College Service Club Providence, Rhode Island

Dear Friends:

I want to acknowledge your gift of a box of candy. Thank you very much—it helps to know that your friends think of you and that friends that you have never met, but who are attending Bryant or connected with it, are interested in you.

I entered into Army life on Oct. 5 then Ft. Custer, Mich. While my wife and I were standing in the Service Club one Saturday evening, I saw Danny Sullivan, Class of ’36, of Fall River, Mass. Surely seemed [good?] to see a classmate. He had just arrived there also and was there for MP training. Naturally, he was lonesome for New England, and his family. I shared some coat hangers with him since his had not yet caught up with him.

I was “Bingo-ed” out to Finance School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, Ind. One morning just as I was finishing chow, a soldier side of me, said, “Isn’t this Cove?” Here was Bill Lambert who was supposed to be out on bivouac but had come in for a cold treatment. I think bill is of Class ’37. He told me Mr. Gulski had been ill. Hope he is in top form again!

I was finally shipped to Camp Grant to a Medical Replacement Training Center. I have had quite a bit of training in hospital work & hope to get into Med. Administrative work.

Thanks again for the gift. If you have anything in the way of a pictoral showing staff & bldgs. I would appreciate a copy. Would seem good to see the pictures.

Sincerely,
Paul R. Cove, ‘36

Pvt. Paul R. Cone, 36881044
Company B, 31st Med Eng Bn
4th Platoon
Camp Grant, Illinois

P. S. Expect to be here until end of February.
[Transcription ends]
