FRIENDLY
HOTELS

BARNEY L. ALLIS
PRESIDENT (Written at) Wichita, Kansas

Bryant College Service Club
Providence, R.I.

Gentlemen:

I sincerely regret not having written to thank you for the packages sent to me by your Service Club. It was very careless but not intentional.

Such thoughtfulness on the part of folks back home brings much cheer and happiness to men in the service. While your package came to me, fellow officers living with me shared the benefits and helped me empty them.

At present I am Supply Officer with the 85th College Training Detachment (Aircrew) at the University of Wichita, Kansas and like it very much. I must add that my training at Bryant did much to enable me to get into the service from civilian life as an officer. And it has helped me immeasurably since I joined the Air Force.

Again, many thanks for your thoughtfulness.

Yours truly
Lt. John L. Doran [Transcription ends]

Bryant College Service Club
Bryant College
Providence, Rhode Island

Attention: Clara Blaney

Gentlemen:

Thank you for your letter of January 19, which I am forwarding to my brother in Texas.

It was most kind of you to send two packages to him. I know that he received the second one because he commented on it in a letter and I immediately wrote to Mr. Gardner Jacobs to express our appreciation.

I do know how much he liked the “chocolate cherries” he received at Christmas time, but I also know that he has been working so hard and such late hours that he probably overlooked writing to thank you. In his administrative capacity he has forty men under him, and twenty-one buildings, plus an officers’ club, an involved accounting system which he had to set up himself, and officers’ accounts to handle. He works about fourteen hours a day and has been too busy to leave the camp even Sundays for months. Although he writes home regularly he often apologizes for not writing more often, saying that he wanted to write but when he got to his quarters he was too tired to do anything but tumble into bed.

Thanks for Johnny, cuz he’s a most appreciative person.

Johnny’s appreciative sister,
Margaret Doran
[Transcription ends]

[Transcription begins]

Sunday afternoon
June the twenty-first [1942]

Dear Mr. Jacobs,

What a lovely thought is expressed in the letter which my mother has just received! I know my brother will be pleased to hear from the Bryant Service Club.

You might be interested to know that the three Dorans who were graduated from your school are now all employed by Uncle Sam:

Margaret:
War Department, U. S. Engineer Office, Boston, Massachusetts

Joseph:
Clerk to the Naval Observer to the Consulate General, Halifax Nova Scotia

John:
Lieutenant (First) presently in training at the Officers Training School, Army Air Force, Miami Beach, Florida

Opportunities are unlimited today. However, we Dorans know that we never would have been fitted for such opportunities as came our way if it had not been for the training which we received at Bryant.

Regardless of what the future holds for any of us, it is comforting for one to know that he is doing his little part to help our country in the great struggle in which it is presently engaged. How much greater must be the pride which you should take in the effort which Bryant College is making to train its graduates to be of the greatest service to our country.

The best of luck to you,

Sincerely yours,

Margaret Doran [Transcription ends]
