7 December 1944

Dear Friends,

Your Christmas package was most welcome to me over on this side of the world. It really lifts a fellow up considerably when he knows that all his old friends back home are still thinking about him. I only wish I could be in Berlin or Tokyo this December 7th but maybe next December 7th this will be all over and all of us will be back home celebrating ‘Victory of US’.

I can truthfully say that I have enjoyed myself since coming over here and participating in the Invasion of Southern France. After this comes to an end and I get back I will be able to tell quite a story. The people over here treat us very well and it is quite an education to see all these historical places. It is something that I won’t forget for some time to come.

Everything is going fine aboard ship and we are fortunate in having movies every night. OF course some of them are pictures that I have seen back in the “States” but quite a number of them are comparatively new so we break about even.

The weather is just like August back on the Bryant Campus. I just can’t imagine that it is December and possibly there has been snow back in “Little Rhody”. I can readily see why people during peacetime pay quite a bit of money to spend the winter over here. Imagine a sight such as a pretty girl pedaling down the street on her bicycle in December with a playsuit on. That is just a common sight over here but if I saw that back in Providence I would think I was going out of my mind. Ha! Ha!

Well, Friends, I guess that’s all the news for now so before closing I want to thank you again for the lovely remembrance at Christmas time and my hope is to be able to visit dear old Bryant sometime in the near future.

Sincerely,
Bill Grace

Dear Friends,

Received your Christmas package and am enjoying it to the utmost. It does one's heart good to know his old friends back home are thinking of him. It really builds up a fellow's morale and spurs him on to greater things so that we all will be together once again as soon as possible.

I am getting quite an education out of my time in the service. I have met some mighty fine people from all parts of the country, and also have had the opportunity to see things that I wouldn't have seen possibly for some time to come. All in all I am enjoying my "cruise" in the Navy.

I am stationed in Boston at present so my new address is:

William P. Grace, Y2c, USNR
Room 1217
150 Causeway Street
Boston, Massachusetts

When I read your letter recently it enlightened me as to the whereabouts of my past classmates. That is something else that you deserve a medal for because by doing this for us we can keep in touch with all the other fellows who are in the service. If a fellow in the States appreciates it just imagine how a fellow who is stationed in some remote part of the world must. Keep up the good work.

Thanks again for the gift and the letters. You are helping this war effort immeasurably by your work and everybody really appreciates it.

Here's wishing you the best of luck in your work.

Sincerely,
Bill Grace
[Transcription ends]

Dear Sir.

Received your lovely gift yesterday. It really does my heart good to know that my Alma-Mater is thinking about the boys who are away from their loved ones. It was a very nice thought and I want to commend you highly on the work that you are doing. I hope you will be able to continue your fine work because it is appreciated by the boys who happen to be on shore as well as those who are on the ocean or in foreign lands.

Remember me to all the “gang” and tell them that I am thinking of them as one of my best “friends”.

Sincerely
William P. Grace [Transcription ends]

MANCHESTER, N.H. Feb. 1 1943

Gentlemen:

I received your lovely gift recently and want to thank you very much for remembering me. It really gives a person an added incentive to do his job well in the service when he knows that the people back home are thinking of him and wish him the best of everything.

I have been following the paths of my classmates in the Bryant Alumni Bulletin each time it comes out and believe me Bryant is doing one of the finest jobs in the country of keeping the fellows in the service informed of the whereabouts of their former classmates. I don’t think another College in the country is doing the job that the Bryant Service Club is doing as far as sending gifts and keeping the boys informed about the activities at home so again, I commend my Alma Mater on the wonderful job and morale building that you have done.

Thank you again for everything and I hope to hear from the old friends back home in the near future.

Sincerely,
Bill Grace [Transcription ends]
