Dear Chairman,

Just a few lines to let you know that I received your Christmas gift in good condition and in plenty of time for Christmas. I want to thank you and all the members of Bryant College for the gift for I appreciated them very much. You know it is nice to receive and unexpected gift, for I had thought the Service Club had lost track of me with all the moving I have been doing lately. I have been moving around California and Nevada for the past few months but I hope I am permanently settled here for a little while at least.

I imagine Bryant is just about the same except for the fact that there are very few men inrolled, now that Uncle Sam is taking just about everybody. the Air Corps claims they are short of administrative men so if some lucky G. I.s were sent to school there, I know they would have a swell time. Few of us will ever forget all the good times we had there, not to mention the education itself.

You know, I would like to get one of those letters you have sent me in the past with some of the boys addresses. So if you have any printed in the future, I hope you will put my name on the mailing list.

Well, I am afraid I will have to sign off now, for I have to get back to work now. However, before I do, again, let me thank you for the cigarettes.

Sincerely,
Timothy J. McCarthy
[Transcription ends]

Dear Chairman,

Well, I finally am going to thank you for your last gift of cigarettes. I am sorry that I have delayed so long, but with moving stations and all that, it slipped my mind. Speaking of the cigarettes, they were swell and thanks a lot. They are one thing that really comes in useful in the army for you seem to smoke just as many as you can get your hands on.

Since the last time I wrote you, I have moved from Reno to Fresno, Calif. and all I can say is “this California Sunshine”. It is really hot. The average temperature around here in the daytime is about 115. I imagine that it will not be bad when we get used to it, but getting used to it is not very easy.

I was glad to receive the list of the boys from the class of 1941 who are in the service. Just reading over the names seemed to bring back memories of all the good times we had together. It also brought one bit of sad news when it mentioned Johnny Hulls’ death. He was really a great guy and a lot of fun.

Well, I am running out of words now, so I am forced to sign off, but again, I want to thank you and all the members of the Bryant Service Club for the gift you have sent me and for all the gifts you have sent in the past.

Sincerely,

Tonopah, Nevada
January 29, 1945

Dear Chairman,

I hope you will pardon me for being so tardy in acknowledging receipt of your Christmas package but this is about the first opportunity I have had since the holidays. After the holidays, I went on a two week trip back east + it was really swell to get back to civilization again.

First I want to thank you and all the student body for the Christmas gift. It was swell + the socks will come in useful out here on some of these cool days. It was swell of you folks to remember us + I know all appreciate it very much.

Things around here are quite dull + nothing of importance ever seems to happen. Right now I have a job of getting parts for grounded airplanes. It is quite interesting + they manage to keep us busy.

Well how are things at Bryant these days. Every now + then the thought of the college brings back memories of a well bunch and a lot of good times. I wonder how the old gang are these days. No doubt most of them are overseas some in place in the thick of the fighting. It would be swell if we could all get together again some day.

I imagine the student body has decreased these past few years with the war and all the defense jobs, but I guess everyone is having a pretty good time in true college style. Going to school does not seem much while you are going but once you are out you realize the value of a good education.

Well, again I want to thank you for the gift before I sign off for the night. It was a very nice surprise for the holiday. I will have to sign off for tonight but I will drop you a few lines when there is more to say.

Sincerely
T. J. McCarthy [Transcription ends]

Dear Chairman,

I want to thank you and all the members of Bryant College for the gift which I received today. The cigarettes certainly do come in handy for everyone seems to smoke a lot more in the army than they did in civilian life.

At present I am in Reno, “The Biggest Little City in the World” – well they call it that anyway. It is a nice city and gambling seems to be the principle industry. From the looks of the place it even overshadows the diverse trade.

I am stationed at an Air bade here and I like it a lot. The camp is good, the weather warm and the whole gang in the company are a great bunch. I am doing a little office work now so I am not too busy.

I want to thank you and all the members of the College again for you are doing a good work and I am certain that all the graduates of Bryant appreciate it.

Sincerely yours,
Timothy McCarthy [Transcription ends]

Dear Chairman,

I’m sorry I have delayed so long in acknowledging the nice gift you sent me. However, it was swell & the candy was delicious. I want to thank the Bryant Service Club for remembering me. It brought back memories of the many good times I had while I was going to Bryant.

At present I am studying to be teletype opperator [sic] & it is quite easy. I have four weeks more & then I can be shipped anywhere so I will drop you a card with my new address on it.

Again I want to thank you & the students of Bryant.

Sincerely yours,
Pvt. Tim J. McCarthy

P.S. Omaha is a swell city & if you should ever travel in the Midwest you might spend a few hours here. You will enjoy it for everything is swell.
T. M.
[Transcription ends]
