DETACHMENT MEDICAL DEPARTMENT
MITCHEL FIELD , L.I. NEW YORK
SUB POST #1

December 25, 1942

Bryant Service Club
Bryant College
Providence, Rhode Island

Dear Mr. Jacobs:

Today, thanks to the Bryant Service Club, seemed more like Christmas than I expected it would. The cigarettes which the Club sent to me were delivered this morning, and I wish to thank Bryant College and the Bryant Service Club for them. Working here in the Medical Orderly Room, one seems to smoke more than usual, and has been the case prior to Christmas, I have been out of cigarettes most of the time. Now I feel quite sage for at least a couple weeks.

When I first came into the Army and was put into the Dental Clinic, I began to wonder why I ever spent any time in College studying the business profession. However, I soon brought to light, before the proper parties, the fact that I know something about Accounting, and above all, Typing. The very next day I was put to work for the Unit Supply, accounting for clothing and equipment, and doing all the typing for this department. Believe me, Mr. Jacobs, it is my advice to any young fellow in your school that may be taking typewriting, and is just waiting his time to be drafted, to really do his best in this subject, as there is a big opening in the Army Posts throughout the country for men who can type accurately and with some speed. When I came into this outfit, there were over two hundred men, and there were exactly FOUR of us that had any knowledge at all of typewriting. This is a typical example of most of the camps according to the officers that I have spoken to.

I hope that I will hear from the College more often in the form of the College paper, as I am always interested in the doings up there, even if I cannot get to them.

Sincerely yours,
(signed) P.F.C. Charles J. Memmott, Junior

Dear Friends,

This is just a note to let you know that my address has been changed within the past week. it is now:

Army Air Forces
Combat and Rehabilitation Services
Pawling, New York.

Even though I have not “gone over” I will now be able to do something for those boys who have. At this hospital we are going to try to get those back on their feet before they return civilian life. Who knows but what I might see some of my old Bryant classmates. If this should happen, I will be the first to give you the good news.

Sincerely yours,
Sgt. Charles J. Memmott, Jr.

Bryant Service Club
Bryant College
Providence, Rhode Island

Hello Everyone:

Just the other day I received your very welcome Christmas gift, and today I received your letter, so I will take this time to thank all for both gifts. (That letter was just like a gift, believe me.) The candy was just the thing to send, and if you were to ask my wife about it, she would surely agree.

]I am still her in Pawling taking care of the Army Air Force overseas returnees, at least the supply end of it. I am still on the lookout for some of the boys that I knew at Bryant, and I knew went into the Air Forces. Maybe some day I will be able to write and tell you that I have finally come across one of the boys.

If the Bryant Service Club has a list of addresses, I would appreciate it very much if they could send me the addresses of:

Nicholas C. Coracci ‘43
Curtis Dickenman ‘42

These two boys were my best friends that I had while at Bryant, but since I have been in the Army, I have lost all contact with them.

Until we meet again, and I hope that it is soon, I am

Yours sincerely,
Charles J. Memmott, Jr.

Dear Friends:

Yesterday I received the cigaretts [sic] which the Students at Bryant College so generously sent to me, and I want to thank them all very much. I only wish I could thank them all personally, but at present that is quite impossible. Maybe some day soon I will be able to do just that.

I am going to make this just a "thank you" letter because I know that whatever I might say could not possibly compare in interest to the letters which you much receive from the boys "over there."

Please express my regards to the student body and facility, and thank them for me.

Sincerely yours,

September 2, 1943

Bryant Service Club
Bryant College
Providence, R.I.

Yesterday I received a letter form the Bryant Service Club with the enclosure of the names and addresses of some of the boys in the service, and immediately found some addresses that I have been trying to get for a long time. I was also glad to hear that one of my classmates, Ben Scuda, is again safe.

I was quite surprised to hear that my last letter was not received by the B.S.C. thanking you for the cigarettes which I received, so I will take this time to make the apologies and express my thanks.

The letters that you receive from the boys in the four corners of the world must be very interesting as compares to this letter, as my work here is the same every day. It’s this reason I will end my letter short, not because the air raid alarm just sounded.

Sincerely yours,
Charles J. Memmott, Jr.

Hello again everyone,

Once again your very welcomed package found me still at Pawling, doing the same job in the same office. I received the package last Friday, and today I received your letter.

It sure is good to receive some news of the fellows that I knew a few years ago. I wrote to Nick Coracci a month or so ago, but as yet I have not received any reply from him.

I see by your letter that one of the boys is now in one of our Convalescent Hospitals now. It is too bad that he did not come here, but that may happen yet if he lives in this part of the country. I am still looking for Bryant Alumni among our new patients, but as yet I have not met any.

Thank you again for the gift, and give my regards to anyone that I might have known when I was in Providence.

March 19, 1943

Bryant Service Club
Bryant College
Providence, Rhode Island

Members of the Bryant Service Club:

Just two days ago I received your very welcome gift of cigaretts [sic], and about five minutes ago I received your letter. It seems that your gifts arrive just in time as I have always received the cigaretts when I have run out of those I have purchased.

When I read your letter I feel the urge more and more to return to the College again, but I do not have the time at the present time and I cannot see the time coming in the very near future. However, the time will come some time.

I noticed that you made mention to Nick Coracci in your letter. As some of you might know, I lived with Nick during my last year at Bryant, but since his induction into the Army, I have lost contact with him. If it would not be asking too much of your Organization, I would appreciate it very much if you would sent [sic] me his address, so that once again I could get in touch with him.

When I saw the courses that you are now offering it makes me wish that I was there so that I may take a few of them. With the work that I am now doing, I could use some of the information that I would gain.

I suppose by this time that Major Henry J. Lee is vacationing in the Army along with Lieutenant Shors and Lieutenant Hammond. I was glad that all three men got a good position, and am sorry that I could not see them before they left.

Thank you all again for the cigaretts and the letter, and hope to hear from you again as soon as time will permit.

Sincerely yours,
