Dear Folks,

Your gift of cigarettes arrived here just in time for Xmas. I want you all to know that it was greatly appreciated. As luck would have it, just at that time I was named commanding officer of my company for a short while, and the bunch (of over 150 men and officers) helped themselves to the flat fifties you sent me. Sort of [a] celebration. This happens to be a county of dry weather, and that isn’t the only thing that’s dry. Beer and “spirits fermenti” are taboo. Cokes and smokes afford the only relief.

Work is increasingly difficult, but that is only the build-up for the days that lie ahead. The sooner they come, the better; it gets pretty tough to be straining at the leash.

It’s rather difficult to write to someone you don’t know, but I want to take this opportunity of thanking all of you for the gift and the thought behind it all. My only wish is that I prove worthy of the trust you have placed on many of us in the service.

After a short glance at this letter, I can see that I should have appreciated Miss Krupa more than I did. Again, many thanks to you all, and I wish you the best of everything in the year that lies ahead.

Sincerely,
Melvin O. Miller
Melvin O. Miller
2nd Lt., Q. M. C.
Commanding (F)
[Transcription ends]

August 1, 1942

Chairman
Bryant College Service Club
Bryant College
Providence, R. I.

My dear Sir,

At this time I want to thank you very much for the kind and gracious gift you people have presented me--these Camel cigarettes. It was a most pleasant surprise and is, I assure you, a much appreciated gift among we men in the service of our country.

There was a slight delay in receiving your package, due to the lack of proper address in mailing . . . insufficient, when you realize there are 40,000 men here. My correct full address is given you above to guide you in the future.

The work you all are doing there at the college reflects the proper morale, which we here would like to have you manifest. The high standards you have set aid us in also raising our standards and make us strive to be worthy of the trust and confidence you place in us. As we in the Quartermaster Corps say, “Keep ‘em Rolling,” may you always keep ‘em happy and satisfied through your kindness and thoughtfulness.

The Bryant Alumnus “On the Campus” reached me a short while ago. In it, I note that Nick Coracci is on your committee. Please convey to Nick my personal thanks for his good work at Bryant and extend him my best wishes.

Arnold Hallem, Ralph Dion, and myself think of you all the time and wish you every success in your good work.

Sincerely,
Cadet Melvin O. Miller
Bryant ‘37
[Transcription ends]
