8 JAN. 44

Dear Friends;

Christmas Day I received a carton of cigarettes which you sent to me and I was very pleased to get them. Naturally I was glad that I had been remembered by the Bryant Service Club. I am sorry that I haven't acknowledged this gift sooner but I have been very busy up here and just haven't had time for any letter writing at all.

I often think of Bryant and of the swell times I had while attending there. I only wish that I was back there now, however there is another job to attend to right now. I still correspond with my two room-mates and we are the best of friends. I will never forget what Bryant College has done for me. I suppose that there are very few fellows attending Bryant this year due to the war. However, I guess it's that way with most of the colleges right now.

I am in hopes of returning to the states sometime this year. I sure would like to drop in at the college and look around for a little while. The weather here in the Aleutians is really terrible. However I am not kicking.

Well I must be going now. Once again I want to thank the Bryant Service Club and the students for remembering me this Christmas. Your letters are always appreciated for I am always anxious to here [sic] about Bryant and its' [sic] students. Until we all meet again

GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Very truly yours,
Richard C. Walrath
Richard C. Walrath Sk 3/c
[Transcription ends]

UNITED STATES NAVY

3 Oct. 43

Dear friends

Just recently I received your letter of May 30th. Naturally I was glad to hear from you all. I must apologize for not writing sooner but I have been very busy. Since coming up here to Dutch Harbor I have received some cigarettes which you sent me. Let me thank you right now for thinking of me.

I must admit that I never kept in touch with the Bryant Service Club but I have moved around quite a bit since coming in service.

There isn’t much I can tell you about this place for we are subject to censorship. I am going on my forth month up here and it isn’t so bad. We have bowling alleys, gym, and movies up here. Hence we are really living.

I write often to my ex roommate Larry Barbeau, he is still in Virginia. I was glad to hear Ben Scuda was found alive. I knew him very well. Often I think of the swell times I had back at Bryant and wished that I was there once again. I think of all the friends I made there and wonder where they are.

I have no idea when I will get back to the states again. Most likely not for a long time. We must all have faith and know that victory will soon be ours. Please remember me to the Faculty and to everyone else. I will be anxious to hear form you in the near future.

Until we meet again

Yours truly
Richard C. Walrath

My dear friends;

The other day I received your package which you sent to me a while back. Let me take this opportunity to thank you for your kind deed.

Since the last time you heard from me a lot has happened to me. In May of this year our outfit returned home from overseas. I’ve had a 30 day leave which was welcomed by us all. Just before coming back I received the sad news that my mother passed away.

When I was home on my 30 day leave I was married to a girl in my home town. S o you see a lot has happened.

At the present time we are stationed at this base doing a very important job.

I hear from a couple of my classmates now + then + naturally I am glad to hear from them.

Often I wish I was back at Bryant College. However those days are over for now. I will always remember those days of my life.

It sure seemed good to get back to the gold old U.S.A. Being away from home really makes you appreciate things a lot more.

There is no news from here. In fact I can’t even tell you what we are doing here in the states, however let me say we are doing an important job. It will be nice when this war is over and we can all get together again. Let us pray that this war will be over soon so we may all be together again.

I would like to hear form you all + also know the latest news of Bryant. Until we meet again

Thanks for remembering me.

God Bless You All.

SEABEES
U. S. NAVAL CONSTRUCTION TRAINING CENTER
CAMP BRADFORD-ALLEN
NORFOLK, VA.

Dec. 28, 1942

My dear Mr. Ripley

This is the first opportunity I have had to do any letter writing for I just got out of one of the hospitals here at camp. I have been layed [sic] up with a bad cold in my chest and for that reason haven’t had a chance to do much letter writing.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Bryant Service Club for sending me the 2 packages of flat 50’s cigarettes which they sent me a week or two back. It really was sweet of them and I appreciate it a great deal.

Last week Larry Barbeau came up to see me. I sure was glad to see him. He is stationed about 8 miles from where I am. 4th Bat. that I was with is leaving for Rhode Island today. The reason I was left behind is so that I could go to Storekeeper’s school. After completing the course I will be assigned to a Bat.

Well I must go now. Once again thanks for the cigarettes, thanks loads. Remember me to everyone at the school.

Yours truly
Richard C. Walrath [Transcription ends]
