Black and white photograph of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis taken on October 28, 1972 during a one day whistle-stop tour by Mrs. Onassis. Shown in profile to her left is the 1972 incumbent Democratic senator from Rhode Island, Claiborne Pell. At center of photo, looking toward Mrs. Onassis, is Bryant College student David DePetrillo of Johnston, RI. Mrs. Onassis, having been friends with Senator Pell since childhood in Newport, RI, agreed to campaign for him as she also considered Rhode Island to be her home state. This was Mrs. Onassis' first campaign since the assassination of her late husband, President John F. Kennedy, on November 22, 1963. Claiborne Pell ultimately defeated the Republican candidate, former Rhode Island Governor John H. Chafee, in the 1972 Senatorial election.
