Description

This circa 1878 portrait of Christopher Columbus was cut from a larger canvas, which is one of five studies for Hunt's mural "The Discoverer", which he painted for the New York State Capitol in Albany. Sadly, the full mural is badly deteriorated and currently concealed behind a false ceiling.

Unfortunately many of Hunt's paintings and sketches, together with five large Millets and other art treasures collected by him in Europe, were destroyed in the great Boston fire of 1872.
