Abstract

Codified primarily in Article 15 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, cultural rights have received considerable attention during the past decade. The catalyzing event has been the appointment of the first Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights, Farida Shaheed, “a sociologist by training and activist by choice” (ix). During her tenure, Shaheed authored ten thematic reports that have propelled cultural rights into mainstream human rights discourse and are the focus of essays collected in this edited volume.
