Description
Inside the Cathedral
Alexandre Gregoire
Born 1922, Jacmel, Haiti
Gregoire is recognized as one of the Haitian art world's true '"naives". His paintings are pure and innocent, usually finding inspiration in religious and voodoo themes, with a joyous rhythm all their own.
Gregoire joined the Centre d'Art in the mid-to-late '50s, along with other young artists, after meeting two of Haiti's most eminent artists, Prefete Duffault and Gerard Valcin.
It is said that most all human faces in his paintings bear Gregoire's features. Anyone familiar with the artist can testify to the truth of this statement.
