Seymour Etienne (S.E.) Bottex was born in Port-Margot, near Cap-Haitian, Haiti in 1920 or 1922. He was the descendant of important generals in the Haitian Army. After graduating school, he worked as a photographer until 1955, when his brother, Jean-Bapiste Bottex, encouraged him to begin color drawing. In 1961, he joined the Centre d'Art and in 1969 he joined the Galeria Issa.

His paintings, mingling humorous, historical, and biblical themes, are exhibited worldwide. He is considered one of the finest Haitian native painters, and he contributed to the decorative frescoes adorning the organ in the Episcopal Cathedral de Sainte Trinite in Port-au-Prince. They are considered the most important achievement in Haitian modern art.
