16" x 20", oil painting. Artist: Philome Obin, (b. 1892, Cap-Haitien, Haiti - d. 1986, Haiti.) Philome Obin's painting style was inspired by the northern region of Haiti, where he was born. This style was considered "magical pseudo-realism" with precise attention to detail characterized by rows of peak-roofed townhouses, elongated shuttered doors, and tiny simplified figures in the foreground. This became known as the "Obin Style."
Obin painted religious pictures for Masonic Lodge No. 6 and murals for the Holy Trinity Cathedral. In 1945, he was given a monthly government salary and organized a branch of Le Centre d’Art in the North. In 1976, he was awarded the highest government honor, The National Order of Honour and Merit.
