Sawyer, Secretary of Commerce from 1948 until 1953, delivering the keynote address, entitled "Business and Education – Teamwork for Strength", during Commencement. Charles Sawyer was one of four honorary degree recipients. The other three were: Mrs. Nelly Taloe Ross, Director of the United States Mint; William D. Fales, Head of the Textile School of the Rhode Island School of Design; and Lucius A. Whipple, President of Rhode Island College of Education.
