About
Gregg Lee Carter was a Professor Emeritus of Sociology in the Department of Politics, Law, and Society at Bryant University. He earned his B.A. in history and psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and after a year of graduate study in the Department of History at Washington University in St. Louis, his M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in sociology at Columbia University.
His latest scholarly research focuses on contact theory, and how its insights are potentially useful in helping humanity to peacefully adjust to its recent social condition of extensive social heterogeneity from its much longer history of extensive homogeneity. He also was examining the varied mechanisms by which race, class, and gender affected individual physical and mental health.
In a career that lasted almost a half century, Gregg taught thousands of students, held numerous academic roles, received a multitude of awards, wrote/edited over 25 books, and was often interviewed by national and international press for his expertise on contemporary social issues. Outside of the classroom, Gregg was a lifelong learner and teacher who loved to share his passions. He relentlessly championed the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and became an avid scuba diver, earning a Master Scuba Diver certification.
Together, Gregg and his wife, Lisa, advocated for social reform and change, including ending the homelessness pandemic in Rhode Island. They enjoyed tending to a bountiful backyard garden, walking the trails of New England, and cheering on their favorite sports teams.
