Abstract
Dialectics, a philosophical examination of opposing ideas, enhances supervision models to support the development of graduate students in mental health professions. We present the application of dialectics to synthesize change and acceptance strategies and enhance supervision of mental health practice. We draw on supervisor and supervisee perspectives to illustrate ways to identify and synthesize dialectical tensions within supervision. We demonstrate how integrating dialectics into supervision can enhance supervision competency in areas of professional identity, skill development, and self-care across classroom and clinical settings.
